ZABALA

Zabala is the stage name of Jon Aguirrezabalaga, a Bilbao based producer and composer. Former member of “We Are Standard” with which he published and released 4 studio albums and performed over 500 live concerts both local and internationally, he currently combines his work as a composer for film and theatre with his own musical ventures (Zabala, Black Crystals) and production work for other artists. He studied music composition and production at the Escuela de Música Creativa in Madrid and at El Aula de Música Moderna y Jazz in Barcelona.

 

In 2011 he co-founded “El Tigre” with Xabier Eguía, a music studio located in the neighbourhood of Deusto in Bilbao, and where he has worked with artists such as Verde  Prato, Sara Zozaya, Kokoshca, Gari, Laura Sam and Juan Escribano, Omago, Airu, Reina Republicana and many more.

 

In recent years he has composed the soundtrack for the documentary “Cabeza y corazón” by Zuriñe Goikoetxea and Ainhoa Andraka as well as short films such as “Catfinement” by Javier Seisdedos and “Ur Azpian Lore” by Aitor Oñederra.

In theatre he was tasked with leading the composition for “Ama Kuraia”, a play directed by Maria Goiricelaya and produced by the Teatro Arriaga. It was this same director with whom he also collaborated on the adaptation of “Yerma” in 2021, a production of the Sala BBK. In 2022 he composed the music for the Street play “Senta”, an adaptation of Wagner´s Flying Dutchman funded by the companies Hortzmuga and Deabru Beltzak. “Martian Civilization OST” (Forbidden Colours) is the first LP by Zabala, who already released an EP “Vik” with the label Mushroom Pillow in 2018, it received good reviews and caused a significant impact in the US, Mexico and Japan.

 

His latest LP has recently been nominated in the category of best electronic recording at the MIN awards, and was chosen among the best releases in 2021 as stated in publications in Mondosonoro, Hipersónica or Clubbingspain and others. In 2022 he has published an LP with his new project Black Crystals (Mushroom Pillow) with a sound closer to synthwave and club electronic music.
